When we see the word “biodegradable” on a product label, box, or package, the image that comes to mind is often simple and reassuring. We imagine that the material will gradually return to the earth, become part of nature, and leave no waste for future generations to manage.
In the world of materials, however, the reality is not quite so simple.
“Biodegradable” does not mean that every product will disappear when buried in the ground. Nor does it guarantee that the product will break down in an ordinary bin, in the sea, or in a home compost pile. Biodegradation depends on many factors, including the type of material, temperature, moisture, oxygen, microorganisms, time, and the waste-management system available.
The question, therefore, should not be limited to “Is this pair of shoes biodegradable?” We should also ask: Which parts are biodegradable? Where will they biodegrade? Under what conditions? How long will it take—and what will remain afterward?
Why “Biodegradable” Is So Easy to Misunderstand
A pair of shoes may look like a single product, but it can contain an outsole, midsole, footbed, straps, fabric, cord, thread, adhesives, dyes, coatings, and decorative components.
These materials do not all behave in the same way. One part may come from a natural source, another may contain bio-based ingredients, while its adhesive or coating may be made from a completely different material. Even if one component can biodegrade, that does not mean the entire shoe will biodegrade under the same conditions.
This is why we need to see footwear as a system of materials, not merely as one product carrying a green-sounding label.


Bio-Based Does Not Mean Biodegradable
The words “bio-based” and “biodegradable” both contain “bio,” so they are often treated as if they mean the same thing. In fact, they describe two very different characteristics.
What Does Bio-Based Mean?
A bio-based material is made wholly or partly from biological resources, such as plants, vegetable oils, starches, or other renewable feedstocks. The term tells us about the origin of the raw material. It does not tell us what will happen to that material at the end of its useful life.
Some bio-based materials can be highly durable and resistant to biodegradation. Conversely, some biodegradable materials are not made entirely from plants.
The simplest way to remember the difference is:
Bio-based tells us “where it came from.” Biodegradable tells us “how it can change under specified environmental conditions.”

What Does Biodegradable Mean?
Biodegradable describes a material that microorganisms can break down under certain conditions. But the word on its own does not give consumers enough information.
We should also know:
- Whether the material was tested in soil, water, a marine environment, or a composting system
- What temperature and moisture levels are required
- How long the process takes
To what extent the material biodegrades - Which test method, certification, or standard supports the claim
A material designed to biodegrade in an industrial facility may not biodegrade in the ocean. A material that biodegrades in one climate may behave very differently in another. A “biodegradable” claim without information about conditions and timeframe is therefore incomplete.


Breaking Apart Is Not the Same as Biodegrading
Another important distinction is the difference between a material breaking into smaller pieces and undergoing genuine biodegradation.
Sunlight, heat, weather, and friction can make a material brittle, cracked, or fragmented. It may eventually become too small for us to see easily, but “out of sight” does not mean that it has disappeared from the environment. If small particles remain, turning a large piece of waste into many tiny pieces has not solved the underlying problem.
The United Nations Environment Programme has highlighted common misconceptions about biodegradable plastics, particularly the belief that such materials will readily degrade in marine environments or provide a technical solution that removes individual responsibility for proper disposal.
Whatever a material’s properties may be, the word “biodegradable” is never permission to litter.
What If the Sole Biodegrades but the Adhesive, Dye, and Straps Do Not?
Imagine that the sole of a sandal is made from a material tested for biodegradability. The sole is then bonded to the straps with adhesive, covered with a coating, and combined with several decorative components. Can all those parts be separated?
If they cannot, the whole shoe may not be suitable for composting even when one material is. Mixed materials and permanent bonding can also make recycling far more difficult.
This is why design matters just as much as material selection. The footwear of the future may need to ask more than “Which green material can replace the current one?” Designers may also need to consider:
- Can fewer material types be used?
- Can the shoe be taken apart at the end of its life?
- Can one damaged component be replaced instead of discarding the entire pair?
- Can clear end-of-life instructions be provided for every component?

Recyclable Does Not Mean It Will Actually Be Recycled
A recyclable material has properties that may allow it to enter a recycling process. Whether it is recycled in practice depends on collection, sorting, available technology, suitable facilities, and economic viability.
If no local facility accepts the material—or if it is permanently attached to adhesives and incompatible components—its technical recyclability may never become real-world recycling.
“Recycled content” means something different again. It tells us that a product contains a quantity of material recovered from an earlier process or product. To understand such a claim, we should ask:
- What percentage of the product is recycled content?
- Which part of the shoe contains it?
- Is it pre-consumer manufacturing waste or post-consumer material?
- Is the claim supported by a traceable standard or certification?
The presence of recycled content in one component does not mean the whole shoe can be recycled again.
Natural Does Not Always Mean Sustainable
The word “natural” can feel reassuring. Yet a natural origin is only the beginning of the story.
We still need to consider:
- Where the raw material comes from
- Whether its production affects forests or biodiversity
- How water, energy, and chemicals are used
- Whether producers and communities receive fair value
- How long the finished material will last
- What can be done with it after use
In some cases, a short-lived natural material that requires frequent replacement may create a greater cumulative impact than a less natural-looking material designed for long use. No material should be judged by its name alone. Its entire life cycle matters.

Five Questions to Ask Before Believing a “Biodegradable Sandals” Claim
The next time a pair of shoes or sandals is described as biodegradable, compostable, or eco-friendly, ask these five questions before deciding what the claim really means.
1. Is the Whole Shoe Biodegradable or Only One Part?
Check whether the claim refers to the sole, straps, packaging, or the complete product.
2. Where Can It Biodegrade?
Soil, water, marine conditions, home compost, and industrial composting are very different environments.
3. Which Standard or Test Supports the Claim?
A meaningful description should identify the test, conditions, or recognised standard not merely display a leaf icon or the word “green.”
4. How Long Does It Take, and What Remains?
Fragmentation within a stated period is not the same as complete biodegradation.
5. Does a Suitable Collection System Actually Exist Where You Live?
Even if a material is designed for composting or recycling, consumers cannot send it to the intended destination if no local collection or processing system exists.
From Marketing Language to an SW GREEN Material Dictionary

- What are its limitations?

- How should it be cared for to extend its useful life?
- At the end of its life, should it be repaired, separated, returned, reused, or disposed of in a specific way?

If the answer to a question is not yet known, saying “we are still investigating this material” or “there is currently no suitable take-back system for this component” is more credible than applying a broad green label. Transparency does not require a brand to have solved everything. It requires the brand to explain honestly what it knows, what it can do today, and what still needs to improve.
