Thai fashion is more than beautiful design. Behind every piece lies a story of craftsmanship, cultural knowledge, and the hands of talented makers. Therefore, entering an international market means much more than simply placing products on a shelf.
This time, Milala Handmade has travelled beyond Thailand to introduce its signature macramé artistry and handmade sandals to Chinese consumers at the Thai Brand Pop-up Store in Xiamen, China.
Organised by Thailand’s Department of International Trade Promotion, or DITP, the event forms part of the Qurated Fashion Incubation Project. The initiative prepares promising Thai fashion entrepreneurs to compete confidently in international markets.
Milala Handmade is deeply honoured to be one of the 17 selected Thai brands participating in this journey. This opportunity marks an important milestone for the brand. More importantly, it allows Thai craftsmanship to tell its story on a larger international stage.

Seventeen Thai Brands Open a New Door to China
The Thai Brand Pop-up Store in Xiamen brings together 17 distinctive Thai fashion brands. Their products are displayed and sold in collaboration with a local importer. Meanwhile, participating entrepreneurs can meet buyers and potential business partners from other Chinese cities.
Mr. Surin Soonthornsanan, Deputy Director-General of DITP, presided over the opening ceremony. His presence reflected the department’s commitment to helping Thai entrepreneurs learn about the Chinese market through direct experience.
Over 15 days, each participating brand will take part in an integrated programme. Activities include product showcases, retail sales, market observation, business negotiations, and conversations with potential importers.
This format gives entrepreneurs a clearer view of both the opportunities and challenges within the Chinese market. Instead of relying only on reports or statistics, they can observe real customer reactions and purchasing behaviour.
Furthermore, more than 10 members of the media, KOLs, and KOCs are helping share the stories of Thai brands with wider audiences. As a result, the campaign reaches beyond the physical pop-up space and enters China’s influential digital environment.

Why Xiamen?
Xiamen is an important economic city in Fujian Province. It also has strong connections to international commerce, logistics, and cross-border business. For that reason, the city offers an attractive testing ground for Thai brands seeking to understand and expand into China.
The climate and lifestyle in Xiamen also share certain similarities with Thailand. Fashion products designed for warm weather, relaxed living, and everyday comfort may therefore fit naturally into the lives of local consumers.
DITP selected Xiamen for several additional reasons. Local buyers had already shown interest in Thai fashion, while a pilot project held in the previous year received encouraging feedback. Moreover, the city has consumers with strong purchasing power who are open to distinctive international designs.
Another important factor is the partnership with Seroterra, a local organisation with valuable knowledge of the Chinese market. A strong local partner helps Thai brands communicate their identities more effectively. It also provides practical insights into local expectations, shopping habits, and business culture.
Xiamen’s growing cross-border commercial ecosystem creates further opportunities. Information from DITP highlights the city’s development in international trade, logistics, digital payments, and cross-border e-commerce.
More Than a Fashion Pop-up
The Qurated Fashion Incubation Project does not simply take Thai products overseas. Instead, it helps entrepreneurs build the skills required for sustainable international growth.
The programme covers product development, design, branding, international marketing, and business negotiation. Forty Thai fashion brands completed the training this year. From this group, DITP selected 17 brands that demonstrated readiness for the Xiamen market.
This process shows that successful international expansion requires more than an attractive product. Brands must understand their audiences, communicate their values clearly, and adapt to a different business environment.
Therefore, the pop-up store acts like a real-world classroom. Every customer response, importer discussion, and media interaction provides useful information. Brands can later apply these insights to product development, pricing, communication, and long-term market planning.

Why Thai Fashion Appeals to Young Chinese Consumers
China’s fashion market is highly competitive. Consumers can quickly access products from almost every part of the world. Consequently, emerging brands cannot rely on price alone to create lasting differentiation.
Thai fashion has a distinct advantage. It combines recognisable design, refined craftsmanship, expressive colours, and cultural storytelling. Many Thai brands also develop silhouettes and patterns that suit Asian body proportions and lifestyles.
These qualities connect with younger Chinese consumers who want more than trend-driven products. Many shoppers now search for pieces that express individuality and carry an authentic story.
From clothing and jewellery to bags and sandals, every product can become a cultural bridge. Once customers understand the people, traditions, and techniques behind an item, its value extends far beyond its appearance.
Redefining Thailand Sandals for an International Audience
The phrase Thailand sandals may once have brought to mind simple footwear made for tropical holidays or beach destinations. However, a new generation of Thai designers is expanding that definition.
Today, Thai sandals can combine fashion, art, comfort, and contemporary craftsmanship. Designers are reinterpreting traditional techniques through modern shapes, new colour combinations, and styling that works in everyday life.
Milala Handmade reflects the idea of Artistic Handmade Sandals, where art becomes the foundation of each design. Every knot functions like a line in a drawing, while carefully selected colours give each pair its own mood and personality.
At the same time, these products represent Art & Craft Sandals. They connect creative expression with practical use, allowing people to experience craftsmanship in their daily lives.
Craft should not exist only inside galleries or museums. When a handcrafted piece becomes wearable, culture can travel naturally with the person who wears it.

Milala Handmade: Every Knot Carries a Thai Story
Milala Handmade grew from a passion for macramé, the art of creating patterns through carefully tied knots. Although the technique may appear simple, it requires precision, patience, and a deep understanding of materials.
When artisans thoughtfully connect each knot, ordinary cords transform into distinctive patterns. These handmade details then become contemporary handmade sandals that blend traditional craft with modern fashion.
Small differences between individual pairs are not flaws. Instead, they reveal that real artisans have shaped every product by hand.
That is the true beauty of handmade work. Machines can reproduce consistent forms, but they cannot fully recreate the time, sensitivity, and human intention within each handcrafted piece.
By joining Thailand Pop Up Xiamen, Milala Handmade presents more than footwear. The brand shares Thai artistry through cords, colours, textures, and patterns shaped by skilled hands.
Each pair carries a quiet story about patience. Every knot represents a deliberate decision. Together, these details allow Thai craftsmanship to communicate without needing a spoken language.
Craftsmanship and Sustainability Beyond Materials
The concept of sustainability continues to influence the global fashion industry. However, sustainability should not be limited to material selection. It also includes production methods, product quality, durability, and the well-being of people throughout the creative process.
Handcraft production helps preserve valuable skills. It creates space for knowledge gained through years of experience to continue from one generation to the next. Moreover, small-scale and thoughtful production allows makers to pay close attention to every detail.
The idea of Sustainable Thai Craft Sandals is therefore more than a product description. It represents a direction that connects design, culture, craftsmanship, community, and responsibility.
Customers also build a different relationship with products when they understand how those items were made. Knowing the maker, technique, and meaning behind a design can encourage people to appreciate, care for, and use it for longer.
In this sense, sustainable fashion is not only about changing materials. It is also about changing the way society values the people and stories behind what we wear.
Milala Handmade and Sandals World Share a Common Vision
Milala Handmade’s international journey reflects the wider vision of sandals world: to introduce Thai handcrafted footwear and its creative community to global audiences.
The goal extends beyond presenting products. It includes telling the stories of artisans, local techniques, materials, and cultural inspiration behind every pair.
When a Thai brand enters an international market, opportunities reach more than the brand owner. Growth can also support artisans, material suppliers, communities, and business partners throughout the production network.
Therefore, one brand’s progress can help strengthen the wider ecosystem of Thai craftsmanship. As international audiences discover these products, they also begin to see the depth and diversity of Thailand’s creative identity.

The Pop-up Is a Beginning, Not a Destination
Throughout the 15-day programme, Milala Handmade and the other 16 participating brands will learn directly from the market. The knowledge gathered during this period can guide future decisions about products, prices, communication, and long-term strategies for China.
The project also promotes cultural exchange between Thailand and China. Chinese consumers gain a deeper understanding of Thai design, while Thai entrepreneurs learn more about local tastes, lifestyles, and expectations.
Over time, these connections may inspire new collections, collaborations with local partners, or more suitable distribution channels.
For this reason, international expansion should not be measured only by short-term sales. Market knowledge, professional networks, customer feedback, and cultural understanding are equally valuable foundations for sustainable growth.
A Meaningful Step for Milala Handmade and Thai Craftsmanship
Milala Handmade is truly honoured to be part of Thailand Pop Up Xiamen under the Qurated Fashion Incubation Project.
We sincerely thank the Department of International Trade Promotion, the project team, our partners in Thailand and China, and everyone whose encouragement has made this journey possible.
We are also delighted to travel alongside the other selected Thai brands. Each one brings its own creativity, identity, and dedication to the Chinese market. Together, they present a vibrant picture of what contemporary Thai fashion can become.
From small knots first tied in Thailand, the story of Milala Handmade has now reached Xiamen.
This is more than a beautiful memory from the opening day. It is the first image of a new chapter—one in which Thai craftsmanship steps confidently into the eyes and hearts of people around the world.
Every knot carries a story. Every step holds meaning. And every gesture of support helps Thai craftsmanship travel further than ever before.
