The production process begins with refining crude oil to extract Ethylene. Next, that Ethylene chemically reacts with Vinyl Acetate to create EVA pellets. Finally, those pellets go through a foaming process to become the shoe soles we all know.

What Is Bio EVA? The Science, Simply Explained

Bio EVA is a next-generation EVA that changes the origin of its raw material  from crude oil buried underground to sugarcane growing in sunlight.

In essence, the process works like this. First, sugarcane undergoes fermentation to produce Bio-ethanol from plants. Then, that Bio-ethanol converts into Bio-based Ethylene. After that, the Bio-based Ethylene reacts with Vinyl Acetate to produce Bio EVA Resin a bioplastic pellet. Finally, those pellets go through a foaming process to become Bio EVA Foam, ready to become a shoe sole.

Crucially, the result is a material with identical physical properties to conventional EVA soft, lightweight, flexible, excellent at absorbing impact but with an origin that is entirely different.

 

The Numbers That Make Everything Clear: Why Bio EVA Changes the Game

The global leader in Bio EVA is Braskem, a Brazilian chemical company, through its I’m Green™ brand. Depending on the grade, bio-based content ranges from 45% to 80%, measured under the ASTM D6866 standard.

Nevertheless, the most striking figure is the Carbon Footprint: -2.01 kgCO₂e per kilogram. That number is negative.

So what does that actually mean? As sugarcane grows, it absorbs CO₂ from the atmosphere through photosynthesis. Significantly, the CO₂ captured during growth exceeds the CO₂ released throughout the entire production process. As a result, the net balance is negative meaning Bio EVA production does not simply avoid releasing carbon. It actively removes carbon from the atmosphere.

In short: conventional EVA moves forward releasing carbon. Bio EVA moves forward capturing it back.

Furthermore, Bio EVA is a Drop-in Solution. It runs on existing factory machinery with zero new investment required. In addition, it is fully recyclable within the same system already established for conventional EVA.
