Loy Krathong is a beautiful festival, but it comes with a significant environmental cost. In 2023 alone, Bangkok collected around 572,602 krathongs from waterways. While over 95% of these were made from biodegradable materials like banana trunks and fresh flowers, 4.3%—or about 24,000 krathongs—were still made from non-biodegradable foam, which can harm aquatic ecosystems
